North Borneo Rungus Cultural Safari 2D/1N ~ Kudat, Sabah Borneo
Adrian invited me to a take a stroll round the grounds and to visit one of the longhouses in which his grandmother still lives in. it was very dim in the longhouse as the sun was setting. Unlike the traditional Rungus longhouse, this one was much larger and the living quarters had lofts were the family could sleep. Cooking, dining and studying were done downstairs. I noticed that one of the units had been converted into a little sundry shop downstairs where else the loft was still used by the family as sleeping quarters. Ladies were still weaving in the dark. They had their backstrap loom firmly placed and were working hard to meet a deadline for an order. It's not really a wonder why some return home to stay despite being away and having experienced the world. This lifestyle holds a community spirit. Something that cities no longer provide, and something that if we did have, then perhaps there would be more tolerance on earth.
Grant yourself a chance to indulge in life’s simple luxuries, go back to basics and get a real taste of an authentic Longhouse experience by spending a night in the Rungus Longhouse. Traditionally, the Rungus people live in longhouses built on stilts, the modern-day shift has meant that the sight of such longhouses are getting more rare. In Kg. Bavanggazo near Tinangol in the Kudat district, the tradition is kept especially alive with fascinating communal lifestyle in a purpose-built longhouse constructed entirely of traditional materials but with added modern comforts like toilets and showers.

Kota Kinabalu / Scenic Countryside / Bavanggazo (Rungus) Village Visit / "Tip of Borneo" / Rungus Long House
0830hrs: Meet & greet at your hotel lobby, where we will then whisk you away to the sunny shores that grace the Northern most tip of Borneo.
3 hours from the city marks Kudat, where the South China Sea and Sulu Sea converge. This little slice of paradise, bafflingly beautiful with the harmony of sunny skies, blue seas, palm tree was then then first capital of British North Borneo Chartered Company then.
The journey will bring you through scenic countryside, paddy fields, villages, palm oil plantations; local stalls selling, handicrafts and knick-knacks for souvenirs. Along the way, make a few pit stops at Tuaran, a bustling little town with tree-lined boulevard-style streets. Walk across the suspension (hanging) bridge, visit the peanut's stall and capture panoramic shots of the distinctive nine-storey Chinese Pagoda, whose approaches are dominated by vividly painted guardian deities.
Next up, we proceed to the Bavanggazo Village for a longhouse visit. Built entirely using local materials, it is home to the Rungus people community, a sub-tribe of the indigenous Kadazandusun. Observe their very own unique bead work, lifestyle and costumes.
Lunch will be served Rungus syle.
After the hefty traditional native lunch, cruise on over to the Northern Tip of Borneo, also known as Tanjung Simpang Mengayau which means 'lingering junction' as it is here that the South China Sea lingers and meets the Sulu Seas flowing from the east. Take a stroll on the lavish expanse of white sand that comes complimentary with a breath-taking view of dramatic rocky outcrops. The northern most tip of Borneo is graced with wide publicity through popular mass media from the 2003 book entitled KUDAT.
A short drive to the Kudat town to get a whiff of the nostalgia that envelopes the town. Then its back to Bavanggazo Long House Village as the rest of the nights is all yours to indulge in.
A traditional dinner feast kicks off with a cultural performance of the Anggalang Magunatip (a traditional dance performed by Murut tribes in the past to welcome triumphant battle groups or victorious head hunting parties) and Rungus dance. The elders from the village might also teach you a thing or two about the nose flute of Tuahi.
