Penang Food Tours and Experiences ~ George Town, Penang Malaysia

About Heritage on a Plate

When we started Heritage on a Plate and the Food Hops, we wanted it to be infused with our love and passion for Penang. We wanted visiting guests to understand why the food here is so special and how it is intricately connected to the identities of the people who make it. George Town is a new city, but it is a city with a storied past that shapes our present.

We've had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, from local vendors to visitors across the world. We've realised that food creates a connection between individuals, cultures and lived experiences. It is a bridge between the place you're at and the place you're from. Right now, the world needs more bridges between people.

We've had great success with our Food HOPs. We've gotten a little older and none the wiser. We’re still idealists and optimists at heart. We still love food and travel and believe that these things can make the world a better place, if we do it right.

To help make sure that we do it right, we’ve formalised three guiding values for Heritage on a Plate. We apply them in all our decisions. Guided by these values and with the support of our customers, vendors, employees and friends we believe that we can give people meaningful travel experiences that are responsible, sustainable and ethical.

This is what we do: nourishing personal experiences through food.

Our Values

It’s Personal

Imagine being able to take a time machine to any point in history but the voice-over is robotic, the spaces are cramped and no one seems enthusiastic about anything. That’s no fun. Let’s do it better!

How about a little peek into the founding of Penang? How did it become such a diverse, colourful, bazaar of food from all over Asia? What if this entire city is a gallery of life and art and history and culture and we could just have a taste of it?

We believe that connecting with people is one of the most rewarding things in life. We’re passionate to explore, thirsty for stories to learn and tell, and hungry for new experiences. We really care about what we do and we like to do it with flair and passion and a sense of fun.

People Matter

Imagine a future where things are super efficient but our machine overlords aren’t very friendly. We aren’t that far away from that reality, with chatbots and self-guided apps and algorithms that maximise efficiency at a human cost.

Food cannot be separated from human connection. We don’t just eat: we experience, we remember, we bond. From our earliest memories of the morning aromas in the kitchen, to the comfort of finding those same memories in a far away place, food is often the means to something intangible but no less nourishing.

That’s why we pledge to always remember the value of people. From our guests, to our suppliers, to our employees and everyone in between. Valuing people and the connections between us is inseparable from what we do, and who we are.

Do Good

Well, we’ve certainly found ourselves in interesting times, haven’t we? There aren’t any flying cars but the polar bears are on fire. It’s a bit worrying, and a little bit scary.

We don’t know if we can change the world, but we have a chance do some good things in our little corner of the globe. Travel is such a powerful activity - the opportunity to experience new unfamiliar places, to meet people with diverse lived experiences and to discover the boundaries of our own knowledge - it’s a powerful, transformative thing.

We pledge to aid that transformative power, because we believe it can have incredible effects on the state of the world. We’re just a few bright-eyed young kids on a little island in Malaysia but we intend to use whatever opportunities we’re given to do some good things.
