Hotel Penaga - Georgetown , Penang Malaysia
Penaga hotel was converted from a cluster of 15 pre-war terraces and shophouses, facing Hutton Lane, Transfer Road and Clarke Street, into a heritage boutique hotel that maintains the character of the heritage zone..
It was originally a three row, double storey, terraced building located in Georgetown that included houses and shophouses. Built sometime in the 1920s it was renovated post war.
A lovely couple bought this building and converted it into a forty-five room heritage boutique hotel.
What makes this heritage hotel worth a stay is that most of the renovation uses the traditional architectural methods and original furniture. The timber and lumber used in the building’s design was recovered from demolished colonial buildings. Even the tiles are from other older Penang buildings.
Additionally, Hotel Penaga was the first heritage restoration project in Malaysia to be given a Gold Rating by the Green Building Index. Included in this rating system are factors such as living conditions and safety for on site workers.

In every room there is an original piece or more from a well known or emerging artist, as well as original natural history prints and maps that relate to Penang. Every bathroom has a Jacuzzi spa bath and a separate shower. Toiletries are locally made, from craftsmen and women who specialise in the fragrances and products of the region.

Enter from the five foot way through the traditional double layer of doors into the main room, floored with encaustic tiles and furnished with antiques, classic modern pieces and stunning art works. The bar can be fitted out as an operating kitchen for longer stay guests on request. A private Jacuzzi spa in the back garden leaves lots of space for al fresco dining, and your own gate leads to the hotel's inner garden. You have the choice of ceiling fans or air conditioning, and these houses are suitable for guests to bring their pets... some conditions apply.
