Kelantan - Malaysia
Kota Bharu is the capital city of north eastern state of Kelantan. Kelantan , also known as the cradle of malay culture is indeed a people of its own. Largely misconstrued as a fanatically islamic state, Kelantan is pleasant , relaxed and pretty forward thinking especially when its to do with racial differences.
Through the arch and across the road sits Padang Merdeka or Merdeka Square. Nearby is Masjid Negri or the State Mosque. Also known as Serambi Mekah or Veranda of Mecca, this is Mosque was instrumental in spreading Islam throughout the state.
Kota Bharu is the belly of Malay Cuisine. The infused flavours of malay, thai and chinese is subtle and it reflects in its sweet, spicy , varied tastes
It is not certain as to the songket's place of origin but the Kelatanese believe that this weaving technique came from the North, somewhere in the Cambodia-Siam region and expanded south into Pattani and finally to Kelantan and Terengganu. However, Terengganu weavers believe that Indian traders brought songket weaving to Palembang and Jambi where it probably originated during the time of Srivijaya
Akademi Nik Rashiddin is a treasure. It is one of the few organisations in Malaysia that are run by individuals whose undying passion for the true Malay art is pure and unadulterated. It is not a museum, it is a testimant that the Malay civilisation was once truly an elite class of its own. Sadly no more...
The wooden fishing boats moored at Pengkalan Anak Gajah are brightly painted with an assortment of motifs , mainly of flora as encouraged by the Islamic movement to steer away from using human and animal motifs
