Kubah National Park (GLT12a)

Situated just on the outskirts of Kuching, Kubah National Park is the perfect daytrip destinations and not to be missed by nature lovers. The park covers an area of 22 square kilometres and is covered by pretty sandstone hills and lush forests. A number of well-worn walking trails led the way through Kubah National Park, and visitors who follow these will be able to reach stunning natural features such as caves and sparkling waterfalls, while the rainforest is full of plants such as colourful orchids. The trails that lead the way through the park are easy to navigate for those who like to explore independently, while visitors who want to learn more about the park.

There is a formation that has been likened to the Goddess of Mercy which at about 3 metres in height resembles a woman dressed in classical Chinese robes, complete with hat, look down benignly upon worshippers. Another formation looks like an old man crouching down.

Kubah National Park is located about 20 km. west of Kuching in Sarawak and is dominated by three mountains: Mount Serapi, Mount Selang and Mount Sendok. These are the mountains you can see clearly from the Kuching waterfront. Kubah National Park is home to a large variety of wildlife including bearded pigs, black hornbills, mousedeer – the world’s smallest deer – , squirrels, snakes and lizards.

The biggest attraction in the national park is the Matang Wildlife Centre which can be reached by one of the trails. At Matang you can view orangutans, crocodiles, Sambar Deer, Sun Bears,Bear Cats and Civets. Civets appear as a mixture of a cat, an otter and a mongoose. In 2005, a previously unknown carnivore, nicknamed the cat-fox was discovered in Borneo, believed to be a civet. Even with the new discovery, the major attraction remains the orangutans that have been rescued and are hoping to be released back to their wild habitat some day.
