The Old Shop - Bak Kut Teh
This Bak Kut Teh place has been around for generations and cooks up authentic bak kut teh - the staple diet of the Klang Chinese community. It opens from 5.30am and closes about 11.00am - the early bird catches the worm! This place serves the typical strong chinese tea used to chase down a filling, rich breakfast. My dad's thumbs up anytime.
Location: At Lorong Station 1, Klang. As you enter Klang coming from KL, cross the bridge towards Port Klang. Immediately across the bridge as you get to a traffic light junction, take a left and left again and then a right as this is a one way street. Follow this road which shaped in an ellipitical loop which will more or less take to just about where you started but a little further down the road. From here, left and then right into Lorong Station 1. It's the corner shop of a row of old shoplots, right next to a carpark area.
A Little Stall at Gelugor - Wanton Noodles
This little place is not difficult to find if you know Klang well enough. There are 2 stalls selling wantan noodles here. It's the one across the road from Maybank. The portions are small and the Char Siew is nothing to shout about but the texture of the noodles is springy and the homemade wanton is heavenly. Goes down well with sugarcane juice served here too.
Location: At Jalan Gelugor, opposite from Jalan Kepayang where Maybank is located. The stall operates from 12.00nn but go early as it sells out fast.
Taste Haven Restaurant - Hokkien and Fook Chow cuisine
A sort of home-styled cooking with a little bit of an ambience. Many of the recipes are indeed unique to this restaurant such as red wine mee suah, red wine fried rice and tapioca mee. The secrets to these delicious dishes lie with Mrs Lily Jong who, although no longer cooks at the restaurant but still oversee the quality of her dishes. Her daughter now runs this little cafe.
The portions are large, the ingredients are fresh and service is fast. A good place to try out even if you're on the run!

Restaurant Tetra - Southern Indian Food
Klang seems to have many of these home recipes that have made it to the restaurant tables by entrepeuneurial family members. Tetra is also a family owned business with their own secret recipes and seems to have made quite a name for themselves.
Bryani rice is their speciality. Cooked with a rich combination of spices such as cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, star anise and saffron powder with shallots and tomatoes for that little bit of edge in the bite. From Vegetarian Briyani at RM5 for the works to RM8 for a Prawn, Fish or Turkey Briyani - your pick. The bryani set comes with a huge portion of Briyani rice, deliciously flavoured and mixed in with a boiled egg and your selection of choice meats such as chicken, mutton, fish, prawns or turkey. The dips and side offerings such as the chickpea chutney and acar- a sweet-spicy sauce with sliced carrots goes well with pappadams.
For side orders, their signature dishes such as the Tetra Chicken and Tetra Fish , Prawn or Squid Sambal is a favourite with locals.
If that's not enough, there's always the desserts. Oooh so sweet - the Idli, Puttu, Vadai and Putu Mayam.

Chong Kok Kopitiam - Cheesecake and Local Coffee
As mentioned in the Klang article, Chong Kok is a nice little coffee shop where you can sip local kopi from old cups and saucers.. none of that Starbucks' mugs! And have a couple of slices of Kaya Toast and if your tummy is up to it , well then there's the half boiled eggs. On top of that, the cheesecakes seems to go down well with the Klang folks. A selection of bakes such as Chocolate Marble, Baked Cheesecake, Lemon Cheesecake, Sara Cheesecake, Blueberry Cheesecake and Apple Cinnamon (Autumn Cheesecake) goes very well with Chong Kok's local coffee blend - 'coffeebeans roasted with butter'

Coconut Flower Seafood Restaurant - Seafood and Toddy
Okay. So almost every food critic in town - by profession or self proclaimed have heard of or have been to this 'oh so popular' restaurant. I wonder if it's the toddy or the seafood or really can't have one without the other?
Let's start with the toddy and work our way down to the lips-smacking grub. For those who are into experimenting all sorts of levels of intoxication, toddy is arrak and arrak in Tamil is alcohol and pretty potent as it is. Toddy is actually made from the juice or nectar of coconut flowers. The reason why this restaurant is nestled in a coconut plantation and hence the name of the restaurant . For the freshest toddy, it is best to drink it as soon as it is the nectar is collected. Toddy ferments quickly and the best time here at the restaurant is during toddy collection time ie 7.30am and 5.30pm. To prevent advanced fermentation, toddy is kept in the fridge.
The best time for crabs is during the full moon when roe crabs are in season. The signature dish here is the Salt-baked Crabswhich is cooked in a charcoal hearth. Another house specialty is whatever cooked with prawns. Perhaps the most popular would be Prawns Steamed with Ginger and Chinese Wine.
Bamboo Clams or Razor-shell clams are also a must have. Stir-fried with dried chillies, curry leaves and dried shrimps, this is as fresh as it goes.
Location: 702, Jalan Udang Galah, Kampong Teluk Gong , 42000 Port Klang, Selangor

Getting here might be a problem, try this for instructions - Take the road from Klang to Banting, and turn right at the flyover to Pulau Indah. At the second set of traffic lights, turn left. After two kilometres, turn left after the bridge at the crossroad sign. Exactly one kilometre from this crossroad junction is the coconut flower seafood restaurant. Watch out for a small coconut plantation. There's a stretch of seafood restaurants here.
