Sandakan Town Day Trip Itinerary: |
Duration : 4 hours Depart Time : 9:00 am & 2:00 pm Meet at hotel lobby and depart for tour round Sandakan Town. Places of Visit : Sandakan Wet Market ~ A walk round local markets reveals much about the local way-of-life. Local fish just freshly delivered off the fishing boats at the pier, local fruits picked from orchards nearby as well as from the jungles , local food fare - all can be found in this market. Be sure to wear your trainers as it can be a little too sloshy especially in the fish and seafood section. Agnes Keith's Home ~ Agnes and Harry Keith's house sits atop a hill, overlooking the Sandakan Bay. In her first book, 'Land Below The Wind', she writes,' When we sat in that house and looked out through its open doors the harbor of Sandakan became a background to our entire world. I knew then that was where I wanted to live.' A museum now is housed in this bungalow showing the colonial life in the early 30's through to the late 40's and the famed Canadian writer's life in Sabah, Borneo. For more , go here at Agnes Keith article English Tea House ~ After the visit to Agnes Keith's house, stop by at this tea house for tea & scones Rotary Observation Pavilion ~ Just down the road is a pavilion where we stop for some photo shots of the sea Kampung Buli Sim Sim Water Village ~ This is a living, breathing water village where local folk, mostly fishermen and their families live and work. Cheap seafood can be found here. Salting and preserving fish and prawns is an industry here. Sandakan War Memorial ~ The Sandakan memorial park is sited on the original POW (Prisoners of War) camp which was set up during the WWII Japanese Occupation in . The camp was set up with 2 main sections; 1 section for the British POWs and the other for Australian POWs .
